Boris Johnson considering extension to Tier 4 to try and curb the spread of Covid

It is being reported this evening that government ministers have been meeting today to discuss whether to move more areas of England into Tier 4 ‘lockdown’ restrictions to try to stop the spread of coronavirus after Christmas.

The strict Tier 4 restrictions – forcing non-essential shops and leisure facilities to close – will be applied to more regions of England rather than nationwide according to Bloomberg.

Speaking alongside Boris Johnson at the Downing Street press conference on Monday, Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance suggested more regions will need to face tighter restrictions with the new coronavirus variant likely to spread across the country.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock also said at the weekend that the new strain of the coronavirus is “out of control.”

Any announcement on the new tier restrictions, which would come into force on Boxing Day, could come as early as tomorrow.
