The car eventually entered an alleyway close to St Mark’s Recreation Ground, where it collided with a tree.

After the crash, the driver left the vehicle and ran from the scene.

Officers then deployed PD Vagus, who tracked down the suspect nearby. Police said the dog detained the man using a “stand-off” technique, a manoeuvre designed to control a suspect without biting.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

He was also arrested on suspicion of driving without a licence, driving without insurance and theft of a motor vehicle.

The man remains in custody while enquiries continue.
