NHS workers have been left angry and upset after Iceland issued a policy on its website stating that ‘If NHS workers touch products they have to buy them.’
‘We will be limiting payments to cards only (contactless where possible) during the NHS exclusive hours, and aiming to clean stores following the exclusive hour each day.
‘If NHS workers touch products they have to buy them, they can’t put them back.
‘This is to reduce the risk of contamination.
‘We are communicating regularly with our store teams, offering guidance and updates on health and safety measures.’
Customers and NHS staff have taken to social media to vent their anger at the supermarket chain prompting the removal of the offending policy from the chains website.
Iceland have since apologised for the ‘error’ and have removed the offending policy from their website.
A spokesman for Iceland said: ‘This was an error and should not have been posted on our website.
‘We sincerely apologise for the offence this has clearly caused, and have immediately withdrawn this guidance.
‘We are deeply grateful to the NHS and all key workers for everything they are doing to keep the country running.’
