Free activities and family support on offer across Swindon this summer

Families across Swindon are being encouraged to make the most of a packed programme of free and affordable activities this summer, with everything from splash parks and festivals to holiday clubs and financial support on offer.

Swindon Borough Council has brought together a range of events, attractions and support services designed to help families enjoy the school holidays while easing the pressure on household budgets.

One of the biggest boosts comes in August, when children aged between five and 15 will be able to travel free on local bus services, making it easier to reach attractions and activities across the borough.

Among the highlights is the Summer Reading Challenge in Swindon’s libraries, while Coate Water Splash Park is once again expected to prove a popular destination during warmer weather.

Lydiard Park also has a busy programme planned, including outdoor cinema screenings, theatre performances, the annual Garden Party and Mad4Animals event. Families can also take advantage of ‘Kids for a Quid’ offers at both Lydiard House Museum and STEAM Museum, allowing children to visit for just £1.

Young people will also have the chance to get involved in Signal Festival, running from 24 July to 1 August, celebrating the creativity and talents of Swindon’s younger generation through a variety of performances, workshops and activities.

For those looking for a quieter day out, the borough’s parks, woodlands and nature reserves provide plenty of opportunities for family walks, wildlife spotting, picnics and outdoor adventures.

Alongside the leisure activities, the council is reminding residents that practical support is available throughout the summer holidays for anyone who may need extra help.

Welcome Spaces and Community Hubs continue to offer advice, information and a place to connect with local services, including the hubs based at Park Library and Central Library.

Eligible children receiving benefits-related free school meals can also take part in the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which provides funded holiday clubs offering activities alongside nutritious meals.

Affordable food schemes, including Haven Pantry, Parks Pantry and Penhill Pantry, continue to support local families, while the Community Fridge at Gorse Hill Baptist Church offers free surplus food without the need for a referral.

Residents concerned about food or finances during the school holidays can also seek advice from Citizens Advice, including help with childcare costs, financial wellbeing and referrals to additional support, such as the council’s Crisis and Resilience Fund.

Councillor Matt Hinton, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Engagement, Safety and Services, said: “Summer should be a time for children and families to enjoy spending time together, and there is an incredible range of activities taking place across Swindon over the coming weeks.

“We’re fortunate to have excellent parks, libraries, museums and community spaces offering free and affordable ways for families to have fun, learn something new and explore their local area.

“We also recognise that the school holidays can create additional financial pressures for some households. That’s why we’re working with local partners to ensure support is available, whether that’s help with food, childcare costs, financial advice or holiday activities.

“I’d encourage everyone to visit our Summer in Swindon webpage to discover what’s happening and find out about the support available.”
