Four men have been arrested following an attempted burglary at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon in the early hours of this morning.
Wiltshire Police were called to the hospital on Wednesday, 22 July, after reports that two vehicles had entered the hospital grounds near the energy centre.
Witnesses reported seeing four people wearing balaclavas and carrying crowbars get out of the vehicles before leaving the area.
Although the suspects had gone by the time officers arrived, a coordinated search involving Wiltshire Police response teams, specialist operations officers and colleagues from Gloucestershire Constabulary quickly traced the vehicles on the A417.
Four men, aged 22, 27, 29 and 31, from London and Gloucestershire, were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.
In addition, the 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, while the 27-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of drug driving and possession of an offensive weapon.
All remain in police custody while enquiries continue.
Chief Inspector Carly Nesbitt praised the joint operation, saying: “This was excellent teamwork by all involved to make these four arrests and prevent a burglary taking place at the hospital.
“It is believed the suspects were targeting nitrous oxide canisters – enquiries are currently ongoing.”
A spokesperson for Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the hospital is assisting officers with their investigation.
They said: “We are supporting Wiltshire Police with their enquiries.”
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
