Expert advice on how to stay safe in the soaring temperatures

Experts at NHS Choices have also issued the following advice on how to stay safe in the soaring temperatures after news the heat warning issued by Public Health England has been extended.

– Avoid the heat entirely at its peak. If you’re vulnerable, don’t go out in the sun at all between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day).

– When inside, shut your windows (when it’s hotter outside than in your home) and pull down the shades. It’s best to open the windows for ventilation when it is cooler. It’s also a good idea to identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go.

– Have a cool shower or bath if either is available, or splash yourself with cold water if not.

– Intake of fluids is vital. Drink cold drinks regularly, such as diluted fruit juice or water. Avoid drinks which are likely to dehydrate you, such as excess alcohol and caffeine (tea, coffee and cola). You should also avoid drinks high in sugar.

– Keep informed of the changing advice. Follow alerts on news websites, the radio, TV and social media.

– You should make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications needed.

– Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors. Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.
