Swindon residents are being encouraged to get on their bikes this summer and support a local charity initiative aimed at improving access to cycling for people of all abilities.
The Rotary Cyclothon will take place at Moredon Sporting Hub on Sunday, 26 July, bringing together families, disabled riders and cycling enthusiasts for a day of fundraising and community spirit.
Organised by Rotary, the event is designed to be fully inclusive, reflecting the ethos of Moredon Sporting Hub and its commitment to ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits of cycling.
Rather than a race or endurance challenge, organisers say the Cyclothon is intended as a fun and accessible event focused on raising money for Limitless Swindon.
Supporting inclusive cycling
Limitless Swindon operates a fleet of more than 40 bicycles and adapted cycles from the hub’s enclosed, traffic-free track.
The charity provides specialist equipment including wheelchair-carrying trikes, handcycles, recumbent trikes and tandem trikes, enabling disabled adults and children to experience cycling in a safe environment.
Many of the adapted cycles are also used regularly by local schools supporting pupils with disabilities.
However, organisers say much of the fleet is ageing, with some cycles approaching 20 years old and nearing the end of their operational life.
Replacement costs can range from £1,500 to £15,000 per cycle, making fundraising vital to maintaining the service.
Open to all ages and abilities
The event will be split into dedicated sessions for disabled riders, families and an open session available to everyone.
A limited number of standard bicycles and adapted cycles will be available to borrow on the day, ensuring those without access to suitable equipment can still take part.
Entry to the Cyclothon is free, but participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues to maximise fundraising for the cause.
Organisers hope the event will not only generate much-needed funds but also raise awareness of the opportunities inclusive cycling provides within the community.
Anyone wishing to take part can obtain entry forms and access online sponsorship facilities through the Rotary Club’s website.
With a focus firmly on participation rather than competition, the Rotary Cyclothon promises a day of cycling, community spirit and fundraising for a cause that helps keep people of all abilities active and connected.
