Two Swindon men have been jailed after attacking a man in the town leaving him with a broken jaw and three fractured teeth.
In the early hours of Sunday 26 April 2015, Shajahan Ali (23 – top) from Broad Street and and Mitchell Collins-Castro (22 – below) from Buckingham Road assaulted the victim, who was dressed as Batman’s sidekick Robin at the time, in Theatre Square.
The victim had gone out for the night with friends who were dressed as Superman, Spiderman, Superwoman and Green Lantern outfits on Saturday April 25, 2015, to celebrate a friends graduation.
Following a trial in March 2017 at Swindon Crown Court, Ali and Collins-Castro were found guilty of GBH and common assault.
On Thursday 20 April 2017 at Swindon Crown Court, Ali was sentenced to two years, eight months and three weeks and Collins-Castro to two years, four months and three weeks.
Summing up, the judge in the case also acknowledged the friend stepping in to help the victim – saying he should be awarded £500 to commend his bravery for protecting his friend.
Following the sentencing, Det Con Mike Armishaw from Swindon CID said: “This was an unprovoked, vicious and brutal attack on this young man. An attack which left him having to endure numerous dental operations to correct the damaged caused; he will also have to continue with on-going treatment and no doubt every visit will remind him of what occurred during that Sunday morning.
“I am pleased with the sentences passed as well as the judge’s commendation to award the victim’s friend, which reflects his selfless courage. I believe that if he hadn’t intervened the victim’s injuries would have been far worse.”
