Council launches consultation on Moonrakers roundabout works

A public consultation has been launched on proposals for major improvement works at the Moonrakers junction.

From today (20 Nov) members of the public can submit their views on plans to enable the creation ofa Quality Bus Corridor from Tadpole Garden Village to Swindon town centre via Cricklade Road.

The proposal involves removing the existing two mini-roundabouts by the Moonrakers pub and replacing them with a traffic light-controlled junction. In addition, the proposal also includes widening the road to allow a north-bound bus lane to be installed on Cricklade Road between the junction with Chestnut Avenue and the Moonrakers.

The aim of this proposal is to improve traffic flow and journey times for all motorists using Cricklade Road, particularly for people using the route linking Tadpole Garden Village with the town centre via Gorse Hill and Broadgreen.

Following an initial phase of consultation earlier this year, a further round of public engagement is taking place to present a more detailed plan for the Moonrakers junction.

Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment, said: “This proposal forms part of the programme of road improvement works taking place right across the Borough. These works are vital to ensuring our highways network is maintained to a high standard.

“However, it is important to stress that nothing has been decided yet as we are keen for as many people as possible to let us know what they think.”

If the scheme goes ahead, it will be funded by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

A consultation event will be taking place at Pinetrees Community Centre in Pinehurst on Thursday, 22 November between 4:30pm and 6:30pm .

All members of the public are welcome to attend the sessions to find out more about the proposed scheme.

The consultation closes on Monday, 10 December 2018. The plans can also be viewed by logging on to www.swindon.gov.uk/northswindonhighwayimprovements.

  1. As usual this SBC proposal is all about everyone’s convenience except those of us who actually live in the area. It is a pity the Tadpole development was allowed to go ahead before the roads were adequate to cope. Meanwhile Queensfield has to cope with ratrunners and we cannot have a 20 mph speed limit until someone is killed!!!! If I, as an 83 year old person with mobility problems wish to go to the shops on Thamesdown Drive I have to FORCE my way out into the traffic queue for the Moonies with so many large vehicles that I cannot see to the left! What about a mini roundabout at the Cricklade Road/Queensfield junction?

  2. Something also needs to be done with the mini roundabout at Headlands Grove with many drivers not slowing down for the roundabout in either direction and speeding up when anyone comes onto the roundabout from Headlands Grove! It’s a roundabout not a junction and how there hasn’t been a serious accident there I do not know! Many a times I’ve almost been hit side on from drivers speeding up, hand on horn and crossing over the line whist I am already on the roundabout. Also the traffic using that roundabout has increased with the addition of Liberty Park on the old Headlands School site.
