Businesses and volunteers urged to join Swindon’s Big Town Centre Clean-Up

Swindon Borough Council is appealing for businesses, community groups and residents to roll up their sleeves and help give the town centre a fresh look as part of a major volunteering initiative later this month.

The Big Town Centre Clean-Up will run during the weeks beginning 17 and 24 August, with council teams carrying out an intensive programme of improvements aimed at enhancing some of the busiest parts of the town.

Alongside the Council’s own work, volunteers are being invited to lend a hand with a variety of practical projects designed to brighten up public spaces and improve the appearance of the town centre.

Council teams will be carrying out power washing, removing graffiti and repairing damaged paving, while volunteers will support the effort through litter picking, clearing weeds, tidying alleyways, restoring and varnishing benches, and refreshing flower beds and planters.

Volunteer sessions will run from 10am until 3pm on selected days across the two weeks, allowing participants to choose a date that suits them.

Activities will be allocated on the day according to operational priorities and volunteer numbers, with organisers providing guidance on meeting points, suitable clothing and what to expect. Water and ice creams will also be available for those taking part.

The Council is particularly encouraging local businesses to get involved, either by organising staff volunteering days or promoting the opportunity among employees.

Organisers are also asking businesses to let them know if members of their organisation have registered so they can recognise the range of companies supporting the initiative. If preferred volunteering dates are fully booked, organisers say additional places may still be available on request.

The Clean-Up forms part of wider efforts to improve the appearance of Swindon town centre and encourage greater community involvement in maintaining shared public spaces.

Anyone wishing to take part can register online before attending one of the volunteer sessions later this month.
