Boris Johnson confirms increased fines for flouting social distancing rules

Boris Johnson has used his speech to the nation to reveal a three step plan in easing the UK out of the current lockdown.

Step 1 is to encourage people back to work where they cannot work from home and from Wednesday to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.

Step 2 (June 1st at the earliest) will begin the phased reopening of shops and to also get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Step 3 (July at the earliest) could see the re-opening of some of the hospitality industry and other public places, provided they are safe and enforce social distancing.

As part of step 1 the PM has confirmed “You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.” however “You must obey the rules on social distancing.”

Anyone flouting the rules, such as the groups gathered at St Mark’s Recreation Ground this weekend will see increased fines. The level of these fines is expected to be revealed tomorrow however we are being advised that the fines will be at least doubled for the first instance and increased up to £3,200.

Confirming the increase Boris Johnson said “we will increase the fines for the small minority who break them.”
