Families are being invited to dig into Avebury’s remarkable past later this month as the National Trust hosts a free day of archaeology-themed activities.
The Festival of Archaeology Day takes place on Tuesday, 28 July, from 11am until 3pm, offering children the chance to become archaeologists for the day while discovering the history of one of Britain’s most significant prehistoric landscapes.
A range of hands-on activities has been planned to introduce youngsters to the world of archaeology in a fun and interactive way.
Children can search for hidden artefacts in specially created sandpit excavations before getting creative by decorating their own clay tablets inspired by ancient discoveries.
Visitors will also be able to explore Avebury’s rich history through an interactive timeline, tracing the site’s story from prehistoric times to the present day.
Those keen to test their detective skills can also take part in the Heritage Explorer Challenge, designed to encourage families to learn more about the historic landscape while exploring the site.
The free event forms part of the nationwide Festival of Archaeology, which celebrates Britain’s rich archaeological heritage and encourages people of all ages to discover more about the places on their doorstep.
With educational activities, creative workshops and plenty of opportunities for hands-on exploration, the event promises an engaging day out for families during the summer holidays.
