Swindon Festival of Literature returns — with Artswords events and anthology call

May does what May always does — shakes off the last of spring’s hesitation and gets on with things. There are the usual markers: May Day, maypoles, blossom on the trees and, in Swindon at least, flowers doing their best on roundabouts.

It also brings back one of the town’s quieter but more enduring fixtures — the Swindon Festival of Literature, now in its 33rd year.

Running from 4 to 10 May, the festival once again gathers writers, readers and the simply curious for a week of talks, performances and events across the town. It’s the sort of programme that rewards dipping in as much as planning ahead.

Among those contributing this year is Artswords, which is adding a handful of its own sessions to the mix alongside its regular monthly groups.

On 6 May, Artswords hosts an evening of poetry, while 9 May brings a writing workshop followed by a Flash Fiction Slam — a format that tends to favour quick thinking and sharp edits over long-winded prose.

For those who prefer to take part rather than just listen, there’s also an open call. Artswords is inviting submissions for Swindon Writing IV, the latest in its series of anthologies showcasing local voices.

The brief is broad by design. Poetry, prose, flash fiction and even illustration are all welcome, whether from seasoned writers or those just starting out. Submissions are free, with contributors able to send one or two pieces of up to 1,000 words each, alongside a short biographical note.

The deadline is 31 May, giving would-be contributors the rest of the month to get something down — or, perhaps more realistically, something finished.

Entries can be sent via email, with full guidelines available through the Artswords website.

As ever with events like these, the value lies as much in participation as polish. Not every piece will change the world, but it might start something — a habit, a connection, or simply the confidence to keep going.

In a month already known for fresh starts, that seems about right.
