New Chapter Begins as Drove Primary Opens Long-Awaited Library

There was a real buzz at Drove Primary School in Swindon on Friday 6th June, as pupils, staff and local guests came together to mark the opening of the school’s first dedicated library space in over a decade.

The school, part of The White Horse Federation, officially unveiled the bright new reading hub with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony led by two of Swindon’s own authors — Kayleigh Smith and Kate Claxton. Both writers took time to read to the children and signed copies of their books, creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.

The library project was made possible thanks to generous contributions from The Foyle Foundation, Swindon Soroptimists, and the National Literacy Trust. Local artist Lavender Joyce also left her mark on the space with a stunning mural, helping transform what was once an unused classroom into a warm, welcoming corner full of stories waiting to be discovered.

Children queued eagerly to be among the first to step inside, their excitement reflecting just how important this new space will be in encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

Headteacher Bryony Bardwell said: “We’re incredibly thankful to all who supported this project, especially our reading lead Rachel Liddiard, whose vision and persistence brought it all together. The children are already loving it, and we can’t wait to see their imaginations flourish in this space.”

The launch is part of a wider push to reintroduce the library as a core part of daily school life, and the atmosphere on the day showed just how valued this development is.

Dr Dan Nicholls, CEO of The White Horse Federation, added:

“Books hold the power to spark ideas, dreams and aspirations. This new library is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, creativity and community backing.”

The Swindon Soroptimists, who have donated over 2,000 books since 2014, shared their pride on social media, stating:

“Well done to Rachel, Bryony and all the staff — it’s an amazing space!”

Author Kate Claxton also took to Facebook to say: “It was a pleasure to be part of your celebration and to share My Mum’s a Tiger with the children.”

With the shelves now stocked and the doors open, the Drove Primary library begins a new chapter — one that promises to enrich the lives of pupils for many years to come.
