Swindon theatre-goers are being invited to enjoy a comedic trip to Middle-earth this weekend as an acclaimed parody production arrives at Town Gardens Bowl.
Parody of the Rings will be staged at the popular outdoor venue on Friday, 19 June, offering audiences a humorous take on one of the most successful fantasy stories ever brought to the screen.
The show reimagines the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy in an unconventional way. The story begins with a fictional cinema marathon of the films descending into chaos when the DVDs mysteriously disappear. Faced with a packed audience and no films to show, a group of cinema ushers attempt to recreate the entire trilogy live on stage using only the soundtrack recordings, improvised performances and their own creativity.
The result is a fast-moving comedy packed with quick costume changes, audience participation and playful references to the world created by author J.R.R. Tolkien.
Characters including hobbits, elves, wizards and orcs all feature in the production, which affectionately pokes fun at the much-loved fantasy saga while celebrating its enduring popularity.
The show has toured venues across the UK and has built a reputation for energetic performances and inventive storytelling. Organisers say it appeals both to devoted fans of The Lord of the Rings and to audiences simply looking for an entertaining evening outdoors.
The performance forms part of the summer programme at Town Gardens Bowl, which has become a popular venue for open-air theatre, music and family entertainment.
Situated within the historic Town Gardens, the venue attracts thousands of visitors each year and hosts a wide range of events during the warmer months.
Councillor John Firmin, chair of South Swindon Parish Council’s Events Working Party, said the production was a welcome addition to this year’s programme.
He described Town Gardens Bowl as one of Swindon’s most distinctive outdoor venues and said organisers were looking forward to welcoming audiences for what is expected to be an evening filled with comedy and entertainment.
He added that the event would provide an opportunity for families, friends and theatre enthusiasts to enjoy a summer evening in the surroundings of Town Gardens.
Outdoor theatre has grown in popularity across the country in recent years, with audiences increasingly drawn to performances staged in parks, gardens and other open-air settings.
With warm weather forecast and a unique setting beneath the trees, organisers are hoping for a strong turnout for Friday night’s performance.
Audience members are being encouraged to book tickets in advance due to limited capacity at the venue.
The performance will take place at Town Gardens Bowl on Friday evening and is expected to run for approximately two hours.
