Swindon St George beaten at home to the Torfaen Tigers

After a much-disrupted pre-season it was perhaps no great surprise to see St George succumb to highly rated Torfaen Tigers this past weekend with a score of 22-54 that did not really do the home side justice.

If a combination of injuries and last minute player withdrawals were not enough to disrupt the game plan, on-field casualties meant that Swindon were effectively playing with a huge disadvantage.

The dye was cast as early as the first minute when a quick break down the left saw the visitors score a converted try.

Further points were added from a scrum break on the 15-minute mark leading to a four pointer and a further converted try was to quickly follow.

Throughout this period, however, the Dragons had been showing some impressive attacking moves and it was no surprise when a wonderful through kick was finished off by Florian Palcau, Reece Floyd adding the extras.

Sam Williams was next to pounce and, despite the Welsh side reversing the tide by scoring in the 37th minute, Swindon finished the first half action with a fine try from man of the match Jamie Davidson, Reece Floyd’s conversion narrowing the gap to just 4 points.

After the break the Tigers started to pile on the pressure as Swindon began to tire and 4 tries, 3 of which were converted, saw them establish a commanding 26 point lead.

A Gareth Davis try, accompanied by a Sam Williams goal proved to be St George’s swan song and 2 late converted tries sealed a convincing 22-54 victory for the visitors.
