Swindon Speedway – Match report

Swindon will be going all-out for one more remarkable result in the second leg of the SGB Premiership Grand Final today.

The Carpets4Less Robins will travel to Wolverhampton facing a four-point deficit following Monday’s surprise 43-47 home defeat at the Abbey.

However, Alun Rossiter’s side have often proved to be away-day specialists this season and have notched at least one win at six of the other seven Premiership clubs.

The exception to that is, ironically, Wolverhampton, where the Robins have been beaten 49-43 and 52-38 on their two visits to Monmore Green so far in 2017.

Their last wins at the Black Country venue came during the 2015 campaign, when they were successful on both appearances.

But they are facing a different Wolves side on this occasion, due to the unfortunate injuries to Swedish duo Fredrik Lindgren and Jacob Thorssell, who are both experts around their home circuit.

Both teams are set to be unchanged for the second leg, with Chris Harris continuing as a guest for Lindgren whilst Wolves operate rider-replacement for Thorssell.

Swindon again bring in Liam Carr at reserve, with the Birmingham rider having scored a 15-point maximum at National League level for the Brummies at Monmore earlier this season.

Rossiter said: “It’s the Grand Final, the riders know they have to give it their all, and I’m sure they will.

“It’s certainly not all over yet. We are more than capable of winning up there, and the comeback in the last few races on Monday gave the camp a real lift.

“We can’t afford to think about that first leg now. Obviously I was disappointed in certain things and we wanted to be in front, but we got it back to four points and the tie is very much alive.”

Rossiter has also quashed claims that Adam Ellis was struggling with his wrist injury during Monday’s first leg.

Ellis scored just 2+1 on the night, but Rossiter insists that was down to mechanical matters – and as another rider with a decent Monmore record, he has a vital part to play in the return fixture.

Rossiter said: “Adam is fine, he just struggled with set-ups on Monday, he couldn’t get the power into the ground, and that was pretty much the same problem for the whole team.”
