Rossiter urges Robins to “go up a gear”

Robins boss Alun Rossiter admits his side “must go up a gear” after a double injury blow over the weekend.

The defending Premiership champions go to Wolverhampton on Monday night without key men David Bellego and Zach Wajtknecht.

The Frenchman has a swollen wrist which needs further x-rays after a grasstrack crash while young Brit Wajtknecht has concussion after a heavy crash at Glasgow on Saturday night.

Rossiter said: “It’s a massive blow obviously to lose both of them. David is definitely out of Wolves away and Somerset at home on Thursday night – depending on the full extent of his injuries.

“Zach is out for three matches including next Monday at home to Leicester with the concussion nine-day rule.

“They are difficult guys to replace. We will run rider replacement for David but Zach is even more difficult to cover for as he was scoring well above his average.

“But there’s no point crying over these things, this is speedway and injuries play a key part of every season.

“It’s how you deal with that adversity that really counts. We’ve always had sides that really dig in when they are up against it and we need to do that again. The boys now have to go up a gear to cover for them both.”

It’s a tough return to Monmore Green for the Robins, scene of their epic Premiership title win last autumn.

Rossiter hopes for more of the same, but knows it will be extra hard without Bellego and Wajtknecht.
He added: “We are riding pretty well. Troy (Batchelor) is flying and Nick (Morris) is going well despite his blip at Belle Vue last week.

“Wolves is always a hard place to go. We won the league there last year which was a truly memorable night.

“Nick was sensational that night beating Sam Masters from the back in Heat 13 to set up the title win. We need more of the same from him and all the remaining boys.

“We’ve got a great spirit in the side, now we need to show all that quality.”
