Very young Sumo wrestlers will be performing at Lydiard Park’s BBQ area on Friday 25 August as Swindon Borough Council’s popular Young Wardens scheme comes to a fun-filled close for this year.

The inflatable activity is just one of a number of fun events being organised for around 70 children who have successfully completed the summer holiday programme, which focuses on providing education, awareness raising fun for the children of Council tenants.

A football shoot-out, Frisbee golf, dodgeball, kwik cricket, basketball and rounders are also lined up for the children as well as a barbecue. Every child taking part will then be given a certificate by Swindon Mayor Cllr Maureen Penny.

Young Wardens is aimed at children aged between 7 and 11 is run by the Housing Service’s Neighbourhood Warden team, who help to keep the town’s estates safe and clean.

This summer the scheme was held in four parts of the borough with the Freshbrook Foxes, Parks Parrots, Penhill Pythons and Pinehurst Penguins making up the groups.

The programme focused on road and internet safety and the children also learned about stranger danger and fire safety. The teams of young people made positive contributions to their local areas through litter picking, planting and other projects.  They also learned about the importance of recycling.

Each of the four teams of young wardens also had a fire station tour.

Warrick Lynham, the Council’s Lead Neighbourhood Warden, said: “The numbers of those attending every week have been very high and we are expecting another high turnout for the finale on Friday.

“We organise the finale every year and it is a great team effort from the Neighbourhood Wardens, volunteers and other members of the Housing team.”

Cllr Penny said she was delighted to be able to hand out the certificates, adding:

“I was invited to the launch of the Young Wardens scheme in Penhill, so I am very much been looking forward to the finale and finding out from the children how they have enjoyed their experience as young wardens.

“I think the young warden scheme is first class because there is a real mixture of activities. It is educational, the children learn new skills in a stimulating way and above all they get a lot of fun out of it.”
