In an initiative to drive positive environmental change, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has secured funding through the Blue Influencers Scheme, a groundbreaking project from UK outdoor education charity The Ernest Cook Trust. The trust is set to receive £20,000 annually for three years, empowering young people to spearhead transformative environmental projects in and around the River Ray in Swindon, the River Biss in Trowbridge, and chalk streams such as the Wylye, Nadder, and Avon around Salisbury.
The Blue Influencers Scheme, a £2.25 million project, is committed to supporting young individuals aged 10 to 14 from underserved communities and those residing in deprived coastal, estuary, and riverside locations. This initiative empowers young ‘Blue Influencers’ to address environmental and climate issues within their schools, neighbourhoods, and communities.
The funding provided by The Ernest Cook Trust, along with the #iwill Fund, will facilitate the employment of a Blue Mentor, responsible for recruiting and guiding young participants in the creation and implementation of social action schemes. These schemes are tailored to enhance the natural environment, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride among young environmentalists.
Joanna Lewis, CEO of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, expressed delight in receiving funding through the Blue Influencers Scheme, highlighting the opportunities it presents for young people in Trowbridge, Salisbury, and Swindon. Lewis stated, “Our Blue Mentor will guide them in building meaningful connections with local blue spaces, contributing to the community, and nurturing a sense of pride in their natural surroundings.”
The Blue Influencers Scheme is entirely youth-led, with the selection of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and 21 other charities chosen by The Ernest Cook Trust’s Youth Advisory Board—comprising individuals aged 14 to 21. The scheme’s focus on coastal, riverside, and estuary locations aligns with its commitment to providing valuable skills to young participants, enhancing their employment prospects.
Ed Ikin, Chief Executive of The Ernest Cook Trust, commented, “The Blue Influencers Scheme will give them the funding, platform, and tools they need to make positive changes to benefit their entire community.”
As the successor to the Green Influencers Scheme, the Blue Influencers Scheme remains dedicated to driving environmental stewardship and skill development among young individuals. For more information, visit The Ernest Cook Trust’s Blue Influencers Scheme.
