Currently, anyone coming into the UK from abroad is expected to self-isolate for 14 days.
It is widely expected that tomorrow, Priti Patel, the Home Secretary is going to announce a new traffic light system that we will be able to travel to without quarantine to a number of ‘Safe countries’ from as early as July 6th.
The list of ‘Safe countries’ will be reviewed every three weeks, taking into account the prevalence of coronavirus each country reports.
From the outset the list will include countries deemed ‘safe’ such as Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Travellers will only be required to self-isolate for two weeks on their return to the UK if they have visited any of the countries in the red category, believed to include Sweden and Portugal.
It’s thought there could well be as many as 50 countries included in the final quarantine-free list when it is published next week.
A government spokesperson said: “Our new risk-assessment system will enable us to carefully open a number of safe travel routes around the world – giving people the opportunity for a summer holiday abroad and boosting the UK economy through tourism and business
“But we will not hesitate to put on the brakes if any risks re-emerge, and this system will enable us to take swift action to reintroduce self-isolation measures if new outbreaks occur overseas.”
