A yellow weather warning has been issued for Swindon and the South of the Country, as meteorologists anticipate heavy downpours from 2 am on Thursday until 6 am the following day.
The impending rainstorms pose a risk of flooding that could disrupt motorways and train lines. Residents are advised to prepare for the following potential impacts:
- Possibility of flooding in a few homes and businesses.
- Expected disruption to bus and train services, with longer journey times likely.
- Increased spray and flooding on roads, potentially leading to extended journey durations.
Speaking on the forecast, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Almond, cautioned, “While the early part of this week will see some rain, at times heavy, gradually sinking southwards, there’s an increased signal for wintry hazards as we move through the week as cold air from the north moves over the UK.”
The UK snow warning issued by the Met Office has been escalated from yellow to amber, signifying a higher level of severity. The upgraded warning now encompasses Yorkshire and North Wales, with the most extreme weather conditions anticipated between 8 am on Thursday and 3 pm.
Almond further explained, “From Thursday, the snow risk becomes more potentially impactful, as mild air attempts to move back in from the south, bumping into the cold air and increasing the chance of snow developing on the leading edge. While there are still lots of details to work out, the initial snow risk looks highest in northern England and Wales from Thursday.”
He added, “1-2cm is possible at low levels, with 10-20cm possible over the highest ground within the warning area. This snow will likely gradually transition to sleet and rain later on from the south.”
Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the anticipated adverse weather conditions.
