Year 6 pupils organise successful charity Coffee Morning

Children at Noremarsh Junior School were thrilled to raise over £160 for Macmillan Cancer Support last Friday when they took part in the Macmillan Coffee Morning.

As well as raising funds for the charity it was also an opportunity to welcome new parents into the school.

Parents were in for a treat as children from Year 6 served mouth-watering cakes including lemon drizzle, white chocolate and raspberry cake, banana loaf and gingerbread men among many offerings brought in by staff and pupils. Meanwhile Head teacher Hilary MacMeekin was on duty serving teas and coffees.

School Ambassadors Elsie Banks, Israt Neha and Victoria Richardson were given the task to organise and run the Coffee Morning.

Israt explained, “We have been planning it for the last two weeks, designing posters, writing an email to go out to parents and leaflets to go home with pupils.”

Also helping at the coffee morning were fellow Year 6 pupils Finley, Lauren and Ellie who helped serve cake and count the money raised afterwards.

The idea originally came from Head teacher Hilary MacMeekin who is a huge advocate of Macmillan nurses following the indispensable support and assistance given to her sister who sadly passed away from cancer a year ago. “Their knowledge and support especially during meetings with consultants was invaluable, and to know my sister wasn’t alone during these times meant the world to us.”

She added, “It’s been lovely to invite the parents in today, we are hoping to make it the first of many mornings as we aim to provide regular events parents will be able to attend helping us build relationships and make the school a more welcoming place.”

The Coffee morning raised an impressive £165.47. which will go towards Macmillan nurses and the important support they provide for patients and their families during this challenging time in their lives.

People all over the UK will be hosting their own Coffee Morning events this September in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, for more information visit https://coffee.macmillan.org.uk
