The iconic Aardman duo Wallace and Gromit have been brought to life in lantern form for the very first time as part of Longleat’s spectacular Festival of Light, which launched on Friday.
In a special opening moment, the voice of Wallace, joined by Morph and his creator Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman, led the official countdown to illuminate this year’s dazzling display at the Wiltshire estate.
This year’s theme, ‘British Icons’, celebrates beloved cultural treasures from across the UK — and Aardman’s award-winning characters take centre stage. Visitors can discover Shaun the Sheep, Feathers McGraw, Morph, and scenes from Mossy Bottom Farm and West Wallaby Street brought to glowing life through exquisite handcrafted lanterns.
The 2.5km illuminated trail, which winds through Longleat’s grounds, features a stunning journey “Down South” and “Up North,” with breathtaking recreations of London’s streets, the Welsh Dragon, Scotland’s Glenfinnan Viaduct, and Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway — all set against the backdrop of the magnificent Longleat House.
A Celebration of British Icons
Scott Ashman, Head of Operations at Longleat, said:
“Initial feedback from guests has been incredible — this is going to be our best Festival of Light yet. Seeing Tower Bridge and Big Ben illuminated beside Longleat House is truly breathtaking.
We’re thrilled to partner with Aardman on the eve of a milestone year for us both — with Longleat Safari Park celebrating 60 years in 2026 and Aardman marking 50 years as a global powerhouse for animation.”
In addition to the lantern trail, visitors can enjoy Longleat’s drive-through safari, boat safari, maze, bat cave, and other family attractions throughout the festive season.
And in true British fashion, guests are being asked to help settle the Great Scone Debate once and for all — jam first or cream first? Votes will be counted, and the winning method revealed in the New Year.
Aardman Magic Comes to Life
Peter Lord, Co-founder of Aardman, said:
“I couldn’t be happier, or prouder, as two great West Country institutions — Longleat and Aardman — come together for this spectacular seasonal event.
These beautifully made lanterns do full justice to the characters we’ve created over the years. They’re colourful, full of comedy and fun — everything Aardman stands for.”
