Wiltshire Teenager Wins Silver at National Police Public Bravery Awards 2025

A courageous Wiltshire teenager has been recognised on the national stage for his extraordinary bravery, receiving a Silver Award at the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Police Public Bravery Awards 2025.

18-year-old Ashton McCabe was honoured at the ceremony held at The Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield on Thursday, 23 October, celebrating members of the public who have shown exceptional courage in dangerous and life-threatening situations.

In June 2024, then aged 17, Ashton witnessed a violent incident while on his way home from work. Spotting a man suffering severe neck wounds and police officers struggling to detain a knife-wielding suspect, Ashton rushed to help.

Using his first aid training from his time as a Royal Air Force cadet, he treated the injured man while simultaneously assisting officers—retrieving medical supplies and securing the suspect’s legs using police restraints. His swift, selfless actions helped save the victim’s life.

“From that day, I was sure policing was for me,” Ashton said. “I’m now about to begin my police training, and I want to thank everyone for their support, especially PC Nicky Crabbe and PCSO Kelly Watts who were there that day.”

Chief Constable Catherine Roper, who attended the event with Ashton, praised his heroism:

“Ashton’s quick thinking and bravery undoubtedly saved a life. He embodies the values we hold dear at Wiltshire Police and we are proud he’s joining our policing family.”

The NPCC Police Public Bravery Awards honour members of the public who risk their safety to protect others or assist police in tackling crime. This year’s event recognised over 30 medal recipients and 19 commendations, including Michael Griffiths from Melksham, who received a certificate of commendation for helping police identify a knife-wielding thief in 2024.
