You will soon be able to switch mobile provider via a free text message

By 2019 mobile phone customers will be able to switch from their current supplier to a new one by sending a simple text message, under changes announced today by the telecoms regulator Ofcom.

The current process of switching provider leaves the customer needing to call their current provider to be sent a PAC (porting authorisation code) to pass this to the new provider to enable their number to be transferred.

This will soon be a thing of the past.

These changes, once implemented will also see the end of customers having to pay for their old and new package concurrently saving around £10m collectively per year.

Ofcom, insetting out the July 2019 deadline have also confirmed mobile phone companies will also be banned from charging for notice periods running after the switch date.
