Situated off Shaftesbury Avenue, Shaftesbury Lake has been dramatically improved by over the past 4 years. Working with the Friends of Shaftesbury Lake group, South Swindon Parish Council has installed a new path and dipping platforms on the lakeside, planted wildflowers, installed a new noticeboard, set the lake as the start of Swindon’s newest formal walking trail- the South Swindon Green Trail- and introduced new bins to clean up the area.

Similarly Nythe, Eldene and Liden Parish Council have made improvements to the Eldene side of Shaftesbury Lake, including a new bin, picnic bench and flower beds.

Assisting the Parish Council with the running of this event are the Friends of Shaftesbury Lake, who are a volunteer group who help with the maintenance and upkeep of the lake. The group was formed in 2018 by Gail Collins and Pam Jones, who shared a common goal: “To improve the area for people and wildlife.” The work of the group is supported by both South Swindon Parish Council and the Nythe, Eldene and Liden Parish Council, and is run solely by volunteers.

Chair of the Nythe, Eldene and Liden Parish Council Kevin Parry said: “We are delighted that our hard work and investment around the lake have paid off. Since taking over, we have invested thousands of pounds improving the area. This has included a new bin, picnic bench, flower beds and a new bench on the way. We have turned the lake into a much more pleasurable place to be and to walk around; a town garden feel with a more natural area at the back end of the lake. We are blessed to have volunteers that support our vision of the lake”.
