The flagship Wichelstowe housing development in Swindon has become one of only three places in the country to achieve a prestigious national award for sustainable travel.
The Canalside site has been awarded the ‘Excellent’ Modeshift STARS Gold Accreditation, a Department for Transport-approved scheme that recognises outstanding travel plans promoting walking, cycling, and public transport.
The award has been presented to Wichelstowe LLP, a joint venture between Swindon Borough Council and Barratt David Wilson Homes.
Building a Greener Community
The Wichelstowe travel plan sets out a range of sustainable transport measures designed to help residents make journeys without needing a car. This includes:
-
Off-road walking and cycling paths
-
Green open spaces
-
Electric vehicle charging points
-
Cycle parking facilities
Earlier this year, a car club was launched for residents, allowing them to hire an electric vehicle by the hour as an alternative to car ownership.
To further support greener travel, Swindon Travel Choices provides new residents with information packs, hosts travel roadshows, bike maintenance classes, and guided walks and rides. The initiative also includes Wichelstowe’s walking magazine and a variety of interactive events promoting active lifestyles.
Incentives for Residents
Residents can take advantage of free bus taster tickets, rail travel vouchers, and discounts at Mitchell Cycles, as well as a “borrow a bike” scheme that allows them to try a pedal or electric bike for six weeks.
During the summer holidays, families enjoyed a treasure hunt app encouraging them to explore the area and discover local features. The popular ‘hedgehog trail’ will remain and is set to expand as the community grows.
Local Leaders Celebrate Success
Rob Powe, Development Manager at Wichelstowe LLP, said:
“It’s been a pleasure to be involved in this year’s sustainable transport initiatives, especially welcoming families to the hedgehog trail and seeing them enjoy the new boardwalk at Wichelstowe. This award highlights the progress we’ve made so far, and we’re excited about upcoming projects like extending the canal towpath and path network.”
Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, added:
“We’re thrilled that Wichelstowe has achieved the ‘Excellent’ Modeshift STARS accreditation. This recognition reflects our commitment to creating a community where walking, cycling and greener travel options are accessible and encouraged. It’s a fantastic example of how thoughtful planning and partnership can improve residents’ quality of life while reducing our environmental impact.”
