Wichelstowe homes in on litter: new stations help residents keep green spaces tidy

Two new litter pick stations have been installed at Wichelstowe, making it easier for residents to help keep their neighbourhood clean and green.

The stations — located by the pond in West Wichel and near the lakes in East Wichel — are stocked with litter-picking equipment for anyone keen to do their bit while out on a walk.

The initiative follows a successful community litter pick earlier this summer, organised by Wroughton Parish Council and supported by local residents, Parish Councillors, the Wichelstowe Joint Venture team, Willowbrook View Care Home, and McCarthy Stone. It also builds on the installation of five new bins across the development earlier this year.

Amanda Woodhead, Community Projects and Events Officer at Wroughton Parish Council, said:

“We’re delighted to receive these new litter pick stations. They’re a great, practical way to encourage residents to play their part in keeping Wichelstowe clean and tidy. We’d love people to grab a bag and picker on their walk and drop the rubbish in one of the public bins or their own wheelie bin at home.”

Daniel Pavely, Project Director for Wichelstowe, added:

“The green spaces at Wichelstowe are one of the community’s greatest assets. These stations make it even easier for people to take pride in their surroundings and keep our ponds, lakes, and walkways welcoming for everyone.”

The project also highlights community spirit in action — one of David Wilson Redrow South West’s carpentry apprentices, Eoin Hammond, helped build the new stations.

Louise Ware, Sales Director for David Wilson Redrow South West, said:

“Community is at the heart of everything we do at Wichelstowe, and we’re proud that one of our apprentices has been able to contribute to this project. These stations are a lasting reminder of what can be achieved when local people and partners come together.”

The Wichelstowe development is a 20-year partnership between Barratt Homes, David Wilson Redrow South West, and Swindon Borough Council, delivering 3,000 new homes, schools, community spaces, and over 200 acres of open space. The site features 12km of nature trails, play areas, and walks along the Wilts and Berks Canal, all just a short drive from Junction 16 of the M4 and Swindon train station.
