Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is observed by followers of the Christian faith all around the world and it marks the last day before Lent, Ash Wednesday.
Lent is a period of 40 days leading up to Easter in the Christian calendar. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal for many Christians around the world and a time where many Christians choose to fast, give up certain luxuries, and reflect on their faith.
The name “Shrove Tuesday” comes from the old English word “shrive,” which means to confess or to seek absolution for one’s sins.
In the past, it was customary for Christians to confess their sins and be absolved by a priest on the day before Lent began.
One of the most popular traditions associated with Shrove Tuesday is the eating of pancakes, which is why the day is often referred to as Pancake Day.
Pancakes were traditionally made on this day because they were a good way to use up rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting period of Lent began.
