With different regions of the country entering different tier restrictions on December 2nd, each following a different set of restrictions, what are the rules for travelling to friends and family? Can you travel between tiers?
The specific rules around travel following the end of lockdown depend on which tier a region is placed in.
The guidance states that people who live in a tier three area should ‘avoid travelling to other parts of the UK, including for overnight stays other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities.’
The advice for people in a tier two region states: ‘If you live in a tier two area, you must continue to follow tier two rules when you travel to a tier one area.
Avoid travel to or overnight stays in tier three areas other than where necessary.
You can travel through a tier three area as a part of a longer journey.’
Which tier Swindon is in will be reviewed on December 16th however it is likely that we will remain in tier 2 until at least the next review on December 30th.
Can you travel for Christmas?
Between December 23rd and 27th, travel restrictions across the four countries of the UK and between all three tiers will be lifted.
Over these five days, a maximum of three households can form a bubble to meet at home.
Each of these Christmas bubbles ‘can meet at home, at a place of worship or an outdoor public place, but you cannot move from one bubble to another during this period.
