Changes are underway to a major town centre road as improvement works commence at Whalebridge junction and Corporation Street, aligning them with the upcoming regeneration developments in the Kimmerfields area near Zurich, as well as the Fleming Way scheme.
The enhancement project includes the addition of an extra southbound lane on Corporation Street. This improvement will enable smooth traffic flow past Fleming Way and onwards towards Princes Street.
Furthermore, the upgraded junction will greatly benefit cyclists by establishing a dedicated cycle lane from the western end of Fleming Way, extending southwards along Princes Street, thereby enhancing the cycle network within the town centre.
To ensure efficient and safe execution, lane closures have been strategically implemented during the ongoing work.
Looking ahead, the second phase of the project is set to begin on Monday, 14th August, marking the full closure of Corporation Street. The anticipated completion of this phase is scheduled for Christmas, subject to any unforeseen delays arising from utility companies or undiscovered underground pipes and cables.
During the construction period, pedestrian access and entry into Unity Place will be unaffected, while a clearly marked diversion route will be in place for other vehicles. Bus route changes will be communicated by Stagecoach and Swindon’s Bus Company.
