On World Mental Health Day, 10th October, Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, provided a stunning backdrop for a special sensory wellbeing day organised for visitors from Phoenix Enterprises, a Swindon-based charity.
The vibrant colours of autumn were a perfect setting for a day focused on mental health, offering the group a much-needed respite from their daily routines.
This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day, ‘workplace mental health’, highlighted the importance of a positive work environment for our overall wellbeing. Yet, for those outside of traditional work environments, charities like Phoenix Enterprises step in to offer vital support. Phoenix Enterprises, which works with over 100 vulnerable adults annually, provides work experience in a production setting, building essential life skills, employability, and improving both mental and physical health.
The visitors from Phoenix Enterprises enjoyed a guided sensory walk led by Westonbirt’s Community Coordinator, Mandy Leivers, through the Old Arboretum. The explosion of reds, oranges, and purples from the autumn foliage created an uplifting and calming atmosphere, helping participants connect with nature in a therapeutic way.
Westonbirt’s ‘Community Access Scheme’, supported by the charity Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, allows groups who might otherwise face barriers to access, to experience the healing power of nature. Community groups can visit the arboretum at a reduced rate, ensuring the benefits of nature are available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
Mandy Leivers expressed her joy at seeing the group immerse themselves in the experience. “The enthusiasm of the group was incredible. Many don’t have regular access to gardens or nature, so it was wonderful to witness them connect with the tranquility and beauty of the arboretum.”
The visitors from Phoenix Enterprises left feeling revitalised, with many sharing that the autumn colours, fresh air, and birdsong created a calming, therapeutic experience. Clare McDougall, CEO of Phoenix Enterprises, expressed her gratitude for the day, highlighting how meaningful it was for their group. “For many, this was their first time in such a beautiful woodland setting. Seeing smiles and hearing chatter throughout the day was fantastic. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.”
Emma Griffiths, CEO of Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, added, “We are proud to support Community Programmes that offer everyone the chance to enjoy the mental health benefits that Westonbirt provides. Breaking down access barriers is crucial for fostering a sense of connection to nature and promoting community wellbeing.”
