Waste Warrior shows the way to ‘Almost Zero Waste’

Tewkesbury’s Cate Cody is coming to Wroughton on Thursday 16th November to talk about how she reduced her family’s waste to a wheelie bin a year.

Talis Kimberley-Fairbourn, local Green activist, has organised the event. “Waste and recycling are things very many of my neighbours want to see done better, and want to have more opportunities to do better themselves,” she said. “I visited the waste unit at Cheney Manor recently; I was impressed by the commitment of the staff and the variety of ways they seek to recycle as much as possible, but it’s still saddening to see so much arrive there that could have been reduced or reused before ending up in the waste collection.”

Talis has been working with neighbours to create a community list of all the ways things can be recycled, or, as she puts it, ‘usefully passed on’.

“So much that we throw away ends up being burned for fuel overseas. Maybe that’s a little better than landfill, but it could be better. Getting waste and recycling right should be the easy end of things – reusing, repairing, sharing, composting, minimising packaging, passing things on usefully, and learning to change what we acquire in the first place.”

“I’m looking forward to hearing Cate’s ideas and experiences.”

The event will take place in Wroughton Library from 7.30pm, and entry is free – donations towards expenses are welcome, however. Refreshments will be available to buy, and children are welcome to attend with their parents or carers. Please note that the venue will not be open for library services.
