In a move that is set to leave around 2,000 people unemployed, network provider Virgin Media O2 is gearing up to axe thousands of jobs by the end of this year.
Reports indicate that the UK mobile company initiated the process of sending out redundancy notices to its employees on the night of July 24.
The anticipated job cuts will amount to more than a tenth of the operator’s workforce, according to The Telegraph.
Virgin Media O2 came into existence in June 2021 as a joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefónica, merging Virgin Media and O2 UK businesses.
During the same year, it solidified its position as one of the largest entertainment and telecommunications operators in Britain, boasting approximately 47 million customers.
A spokesperson from Virgin Media O2 stated, “As we continue to integrate and transform as a company, we are currently consulting on proposals to simplify our operating model to better serve our customers, which will result in a reduction of some roles this year.
“While we understand that any period of change can be challenging, we are committed to supporting all of our people. We are working closely with the CWU and Prospect, as well as our internal employee representatives, to engage in open and honest conversations about the future direction of our business.”
