Countries across the world have started to impose travel restrictions on the UK after a mutant strain of Covid was identified and Boris Johnson imposed a strict Tier 4 lockdown in London and areas of south-east England, amid a surge in coronavirus cases thought to be caused by the new variant.
Shortly after, European countries including France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, announced temporary travel bans from the UK, and other countries have since followed suit.
This is the full list of countries that have banned travel from the UK.
Austria – Flight ban from midnight, 22nd December.
Belgium – Borders closed from 00:01, 21st December for at least 24 hours.
Bulgaria – Air travel restricted from midnight on 21st December until 31st January, but British nationals with Bulgarian resident permit exempt.
Canada – Passenger flight suspension from 24:00, 20th December, for 72 hours.
Colombia – Direct flights to and from London suspended – no end date given.
Croatia – Passenger air travel restricted for 48 hours from 23:00 20th December.
Czech Republic – Flight suspension from 21st December.
Denmark – Passenger flight ban from 9:00 21st December to 9:00 23rd December.
Estonia – No air passenger services from 22:00 20th December, until 1st January – subject to review.
Finland – All travel restricted from 12:00 21st December to 4 January.
France – Air, car, ferry and train travel banned from 24:00 20th December, for 48 hours.
Germany – All air passenger flights banned from 23:00, 20th December, to 23:00, 31st December.
Hong Kong – Travellers who have visited the UK for more than two hours within the past 14 days banned from entering from 22nd December.
India – Flight ban from midnight 22nd December until at least 31st December.
Ireland – Flight ban for at least 48 hours from midnight 21st December.
Italy – Flight suspension from 20th December until 6th January.
Kuwait – From 22nd December, travellers who have been in the UK in the last 14 days cannot enter the country.
Latvia – No passenger flights from midnight on 21st December.
Lithuania – All travel restricted from 04:00 21st December to 23:59 31st December.
Luxembourg – All air passenger flights banned from midnight on 20th December for 24 hours, subject to review.
Malta – Flight suspension from UK.
Norway – Temporary flight ban from UK.
Poland – Flight suspension from midnight on 21st December.
Portugal – All passenger travel banned, but Portugese citizens exempt, from 24:00 20th December.
Romania – All passenger flights banned from 19:00 21st December for 14 days.
Russia – Suspension of flights for one week.
Spain – Suspension of flights from 22nd December. Only Spanish citizens will be allowed to enter the country.
Sweden – Travel restrictions to be implemented, but no date and time announced yet.
Switzerland – Flight suspension to and from UK.
The Netherlands – All air passenger flights banned from 06:00 20th December, until 1st January.
Turkey – Suspension of air travel to and from UK.
