Thousands of Sainsbury’s staff fearing for their jobs after cuts announced

Up to 4,400 Sainsbury’s staff are fearing for their jobs after cuts have been announced.

The supermarket giant is changing how they operate including cutting price controllers and axing the night shifts at certain stores.

The firm is said to be cutting the role of 400 price controllers who check shelf price labels are correct.

The night shift will also be axed at 140 supermarkets. Four thousand staff will be offered early morning or late evening shifts instead.

Unite, which represents 12,000 Sainsbury’s staff, has urged the firm to avoid compulsory redundancies.

The union’s Julia Long said: “We appreciate that Sainsbury’s has a good record of redeployment of staff in these situations.

“We will be exploring every avenue to ensure continuing employment for our members.”

The firm said: “We appreciate this will be a difficult time for colleagues and will support them any way we can.”
