Sainsbury’s follows rival supermarkets in a petrol price war by slashing the price of their fuel by 2p per litre.
The average price of unleaded has fallen to 114.7p per litre and diesel is down to 116.7ppl
The cuts are the first on the forecourt since November and comes just days after the Chancellor kept fuel duty frozen in the Budget.
The price war was ignited by grocery giant Asda, as The Sun exclusively revealed yesterday.
A 2p cut translates to a total saving of £1.10 when filling up an average 55 litre car.
Izzy Hexter, Sainsbury’s fuel buying manager, said: “Over half our forecourts have already reduced the price of fuel by up to 2ppl and customers will see further reductions in our remaining forecourts tomorrow.”
A recent report claimed petrol prices have increased by nearly 17 per cent in the past year on the back of higher oil prices.
However, it has plunged in recent weeks and hit a three-month low yesterday.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “While this cut may come as a surprise to drivers as prices at the pump have been going the wrong way for months, it has been on the cards for a couple of weeks.
“We’re very relieved retailers have acted without any need for outside encouragement.”
