Motorists using the official diversion between Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett face a 40 mile diversion between the hours of 8pm and 6am for the next two weeks as the A3102 closes to allow the road to be widened.
The work is being carried out as part of the M4 Junction 16 improvements.
Access to properties along the route will be maintained, but other traffic is being directed via Marlborough, Calne and Lyneham resulting in up to a 40 mile diversion.
Local residents are already speculating on social media about heavy traffic expected along some of the smaller routes being used as a ‘rat-run’ for the coming weeks but larger vehicles are being advised they must use the official diversion.

It would help us motorist more if the roadworks staff put road signs up BEFORE you arrive at said shut road!! I came off the motorway following a visit to friends, arrived AT the entrance to my turn off, only to find it closed!! WHERE WERE THE SIGNS COMING OFF THE MOTORWAY???
Myself and other motorist sat in a “conga” reversing in order to make use of the “diversion”
I saw 1 diversion sign, when I eventually reversed my way back onto the roundabout and no others for the rest of the route!!
