UK border to guard against a second wave of coronavirus infections

Last Friday  the Government announced border measures that are going to be applied to all international arrivals to the UK, and a short list of exemptions. These measures will be brought in from 8 June and will be subject to review every three weeks.

This includes a mandatory 14 day self-isolation period. The measures have been brought in to manage the risk of transmission being reintroduced from abroad to avoid a second wave of infection.

Under limited exceptions to the new rules, some workers do not have to self-isolate.

There are some people arriving who will not be required to self-isolate for 14 days, such as those who play a vital role in maintaining food supply. This includes:

  • Seasonal Agricultural Workers, for example fruit pickers, with a job offer who will self-isolate on the property where they are working
  • road haulage and freight workers
  • certain workers with specialist technical skills
  • anyone moving from within the Common Travel Area, covering Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
