A 38-year-old man from Swindon was arrested in connection with the incident shortly afterwards.

Armed officers then made a second arrest in The Parade, in Swindon town centre, at around 6.45pm this evening.

A 41-year-old man from Swindon has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. Both men remain in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

Det Sgt Scott Anger, from Swindon CID, said: “I know the deployment of armed officers in the town centre, at a time when there were lots of people about, will have been concerning.

“However, I would like to reassure you that this was a precautionary measure due to the nature of the incident and the fact that a knife or blade had been used in the assault.

“We know there were many people in the park this afternoon, so if you saw the altercation or any of the people involved beforehand, then please contact us.

“We are trying to piece together a picture of what happened and information from witnesses will be key.”
