TV licence fee set to increase in April

The annual price of a TV licence is set to rise £159 a year from April 1st.

Back in 2016, the Government announced the cost of the TV license would increase in line with inflation for the next five years.

This is the last of the increases, before the Government set the annual fee increase again in 2022.

The new fee works out at £3.06 per week or £13.25 per month for a colour television and is an increase of £1.50 on the current cost of £157.50.

In 2019-20, the TV license fee raised £3.5billion to pay for BBC services, but it became controversial when the government scrapped free licences for the over-75s.

Despite government plans to decriminalise the non-payment of a TV license being discussed, it still remains an offence not to pay the bill if you watch live TV on any channel, or if you use BBC catch up services.
