Tributes Pour in for Former Conservative Councillor

Council members from across the political spectrum have paid heartfelt tributes to one of Swindon Borough’s most dedicated public servants, Brian Ford, who passed away suddenly last week.

Ford, who served the Wroughton community for 38 years, was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to local issues and his influential role in Swindon Borough Council.

Ford’s career spanned a significant transitional period for local governance, with Swindon Borough Council replacing Thamesdown Borough Council in 1996. He retired last month after representing the Wroughton and Wichelstowe ward, leaving behind a legacy of impactful public service, particularly in health and community wellbeing.

As the Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Ford was instrumental in steering Swindon’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure saw the successful implementation of community initiatives such as Beat the Street and the Big Swindon Knit. Additionally, as chair and a long-standing member of the Health and Wellbeing Board, he tirelessly advocated for better health services.

Ford’s contributions extended beyond the council chamber. He represented Swindon as Mayor, served on the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority, and was a Governor of the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Known for his championing of volunteering, Ford frequently attended events to personally thank volunteers for their contributions.

Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, reflected on Ford’s dedication: “Brian was a hard-working councillor who was passionate about Wroughton and serving his local community as best he could. I enjoyed our exchanges in council meetings and, while we had our political differences, he commanded great respect from everyone in the Chamber. He would also always be happy to work collaboratively with the Labour Group. He was a lovely man. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Councillor Gary Sumner, Leader of the Conservative Group, remembered Ford fondly: “Brian was rather like the ‘father of the group’. Good advice always available, based on his years of experience. Behind the scenes, he was a great friend who loved his golf and a glass of good red wine. He was fantastic company, loved his village of Wroughton and will be greatly missed by all of us in the Conservative Group.”

Ford’s passing marks the end of an era for Swindon Borough Council, but his legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
