The Ethics of Secretly Snapping and Posting Photos: Is it Illegal or Just Creepy?

In this age of social media, capturing and sharing moments has become an integral part of our lives. However, there is a fine line between documenting experiences and invading someone’s privacy.

We have recently been sent details of an online account of a Swindon resident that has raised an important question:

Is it illegal or just creepy to take secret pictures of women out enjoying themselves and post them on Instagram for others to look at?

This particular Instagram account has gained limited attention for its content. With just 156 followers and over 4,000 posts, the account primarily features young females going about their daily activities. The images showcase women shopping at the McArthur Glenn Designer Outlet, waiting for trains at Swindon station, and walking in the streets of the Railway Village, among other locations.

While the act of taking photos in public places is generally considered legal, the circumstances surrounding these pictures and the titles the account holder attaches to them raise concerns.

Taking secret photos without the knowledge or consent of the individuals being photographed is invasive and disrespectful and posting these images on social media without the subjects’ consent further compounds the issue, as it exposes them to a wider audience without their knowledge.

Beyond legality, the moral implications of these particular pictures are undeniable.

Everyone has the right to enjoy their lives without fear of being secretly photographed and showcased online for others to scrutinise.

In conclusion, the act of taking secret pictures of women without their consent and posting them on social media is not only potentially illegal but also highly invasive and unethical.

A spokesperson for McArthur Glenn confirmed “We have spoken to the Centre team and they’ve alerted the Security team to this Instagram page and accompanying posts.

“The Centre team has also been in touch with the local Police and reported the page to Instagram for its inappropriate content.”
