Teenager arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs last week.

At approximately 1.30pm on March 13, officers from the local Community Policing Team spotted the teenager in the Manchester Road area. When the officer approached him, he made off and was later spotted in the Queens Drive area again running away from officers.

With assistance from CCTV operators in the town, officers from the Dedicated Crime Team were directed to the location and the 16-year-old was arrested.

Approximately 50 wraps of suspected class A drugs were located  in a hedgerow nearby.

He was taken to Gablecross and a further 15 wraps of suspected class A drugs were located in his clothing.

He was interviewed and has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

PC Simon Sanghera said: “This is a good example of partnership working between the Dedicated Crime Team, local Community Policing Team officers and Waterside CCTV operators who were able to assist us in locating the teenager who had attempted to run from officers. A number of wraps were found nearby which we believe he had attempted to dispose of to avoid arrest.

“He was then both verbally and physically aggressive on arrest, attempting to head-butt officers who had to restrain him. He continued making threats and being abusive to officers while he was taken to custody.

“Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we would continue to urge anyone who suspects drug activity is taking place in their neighbourhood to call police on 101 so we can take action.”
