The state of progress in Tadpole Garden Village, situated in the northern reaches of Swindon, has come under sharp criticism, described as both “disgraceful and perilous” by local parish councillor Bradley Williams and the Swindon Area Green Party.
Despite a decade having elapsed since the initiation of the village’s development, Cllr Williams decries the current state as being “far from the originally envisaged completion.”
He voiced his concerns, stating, “The situation in Tadpole Garden Village is nothing short of a disgrace. Unfinished roads, hazardous pathways, a lack of street lighting, and neglected green spaces are the unfortunate reality. This predicament extends beyond Tadpole, as I fear many areas across Swindon face similar challenges.”
Attempts to engage with developers, notably Crest Nicholson, the principal contributors to the village’s development, have proven less than fruitful.
Cllr Williams remarked, “Initially, communication between myself and the developers bore fruit, but now I sense a deliberate avoidance.”
In what he terms the ‘Tadpole Tax’, Cllr Williams stands in solidarity with residents, many of whom were until recently his neighbours, as they grapple with this unique burden.
“Residents are shouldering a premium, a precept, and council tax, yet they perceive this as an inadequate return on their investment. This is not an isolated issue limited to Tadpole: it reverberates throughout our town.”
Recent events led Cllr Williams to a borough council meeting, where he passionately called for action. He called for a public consultation with developers, offering residents a platform to voice their grievances and concerns. Swindon Borough Council leader Jim Robbins responded positively, agreeing to attempt arranging such a meeting.
Simultaneously, the Swindon Area Green Party is pushing a motion asserting that no approval should be granted for new planning in unexplored areas until ongoing projects demonstrate a clear path to completion through well-established plans. They emphasise the challenges of proceeding with the second phase of Tadpole Garden Village before concluding the first.
Cllr Williams summed up the situation, stating, “The future of Tadpole Garden Village now hangs in the balance as the local community is striving to garner support and instigate change. The central question remains: Will this vocal dissatisfaction trigger the much-needed action that Tadpole Garden Village urgently requires?”
