Swindonians being urged to share the love this Valentine’s Day with cakes for local heroes

2 February 2021

A Swindon resident is calling for people in the town to share the love this Valentine’s Day by gifting cakes made by small local businesses to our local heroes.

The idea was initially posted on a community Facebook page and was overwhelmed with messages of support from local people wanting to give cakes, as well as local cake businesses asking to get involved, with many of them offering to reduce prices and put on special offers for those buying cakes for Keyworkers.

Rebecca Clements, who lives in Swindon with her family and works as a Parliamentary Assistant for Robert Buckland MP, said: “Since the start of the Pandemic, so many Keyworkers here in the town have gone above and beyond, working extremely hard in very difficult circumstances to keep us all safe, and often making personal sacrifices.

“These include our emergency services workers, hospital staff and those working in care homes.

“Teachers are another example, providing lessons for children at home, while continuing to work in the classroom and helping parents and children who have struggled with much-needed additional support during this difficult time.

“Also, shopworkers, who have sometimes sadly had to endure abuse from frustrated members of the public and cleaners, who are working hard to provide a COVID safe environment for us all, as well as a whole host of others.”

Rebecca, who has been helping Robert Buckland MP with his “Support for Small Local Businesses Campaign”, said: “The Covid Pandemic has badly affected so many local businesses here in the town with cancelled orders and lost income, so I thought that it would be a nice idea to show our thanks and appreciation for all of our local heroes and also support our small local businesses at the same time by ordering from them.”
