Swindon Woman Raises Over £1,000 for NHS Charities in Memory of Her Parents

A Swindon resident has raised over £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by taking part in the charity’s annual “Big Step” challenge, walking in memory of her parents and raising vital funds for the health service that supported her family through difficult times.

Ffion Morris, 26, moved to Swindon from Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, in January this year, but her connection to the NHS runs deep. Ffion lost her father, Rhodri, to cancer in 2015 when he was only 48. His care was managed at the Ty Olwen hospice within Morriston Hospital, Swansea. Earlier this year, her mother, Helen, was also diagnosed with cancer and, tragically, passed away in July, also aged 48. Determined to honour their memory, Ffion signed up for the Big Step challenge, walking an impressive daily average of nearly 12,000 steps in October.

Reflecting on her motivation, Ffion shared, “I wanted to raise money to thank the NHS staff who cared for both my parents. The care my Mam received from NHS district nurses and palliative care nurses was incredible, as was my Dad’s end-of-life care in Swansea in 2015. During those hard times, walking helped me manage my grief, and signing up for the Big Step was a way of honouring their memory and coping with my recent loss.”

Ffion, an avid baker and brass band musician, says she’s been overwhelmed by the generosity of her supporters, who have helped her raise over £1,000. “I’d encourage everyone to take part next year. It’s a brilliant way to stay active, enjoy nature, and contribute to the NHS, which we all depend on.”

NHS Charities Together’s Director of Fundraising, Louise McCathie, praised Ffion’s efforts. “We’re incredibly grateful to Ffion, who has done something truly inspiring, especially after losing both parents so young. The funds raised support everything from interactive scanners for children with cancer to relaxation spaces for NHS staff.”

Ffion’s dedication not only highlights her gratitude for the NHS but shows the positive impact of community support in times of personal grief. Donations to Ffion’s JustGiving page will remain open for anyone who wishes to contribute to her cause.
