The generosity of Swindon shoppers has been nothing short of remarkable as more than 3,000 meals’ worth of food items were donated during the Tesco Winter Food Collection from 25th to 30th November.
The collection, which supports FareShare and Trussell, saw a total of 3,039 meals’ worth of long-life food items contributed across Swindon stores. These donations will offer vital support to local food banks and charities, especially during the challenging Christmas period.
Donations to Trussell help supply emergency food parcels to individuals and families unable to afford basic necessities. Meanwhile, FareShare redistributes food to thousands of frontline charities, ensuring local communities receive much-needed assistance.
As Christmas approaches, demand for both charities’ services is expected to rise, with many families facing increased costs. In recognition of this, Tesco has contributed an additional £500,000 to support the charities in their work this winter.
Tesco CEO Ken Murphy expressed his gratitude to customers, stating: “I want to thank every single person who donated items at this year’s Winter Food Collection. Your generosity makes a real difference in the communities supported by Trussell and FareShare.”
In addition to the food donations, customers raised over £340,000 for the charities by rounding up their bills at the till or donating via Tesco’s online groceries platform.
Kristopher Gibbon-Walsh, CEO of FareShare, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “Every year, we are blown away by the generosity of Tesco customers. This year is no exception. Your support allows us to continue bringing food to communities in need, helping to strengthen those communities during the colder months.”
Emma Revie, CEO of Trussell, underscored the ongoing need for food banks: “Food banks in the Trussell network are a lifeline for those left facing hunger and hardship. Yet, many are at breaking point as demand continues to soar.
“Thanks to the Tesco Winter Food Collection and the support of generous customers, we can ensure food banks have the resources they need to support people in crisis this winter.”
This year, Trussell has provided over 1.4 million emergency food parcels across the UK from April to September, reflecting the scale of need in communities.
Although the Winter Food Collection has concluded, support is still needed. Tesco stores across the UK have permanent food donation points, and customers can continue to donate after their online shops or via the link here until February 2025.
