Swindon Scout Pack learn to make trench candles used in Ukraine

Cub scouts from the 19th Swindon Cub Scout Pack led by Akela Nas ABC took time out from earning badges on Tuesday evening to listen to Mike Bowden, Chair of The Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP).

Mike Bowden, gave a short talk about the work of the organisation and spoke about the value of supporting humanitarian aid projects. The youngsters were also shown how to make a trench or heat candle.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Mike described how, you take a can of beans – the youngsters insisted on Heinz! – you eat the beans, wash out the tin and cram it with rolled corrugated cardboard before filling the tin with liquid candle wax.

The three trench candles that were made on the evening will now be sent to Ukraine by SHAP along with hundreds of others to keep cold feet and hands warm and ironically to heat food like beans to satisfy empty stomachs.

Akala Nas said “I’d like to thank Mike for talking with such obvious enthusiasm to our pack.

“It is important they are challenged in the right way to think about and reflect on issues like the Russian invasion of Ukraine -they all leant a lot this evening but also had fun making trench candles.”
